April 5, 2018 Cairns

April 5, 2018

Today we are going on an excursion in Cairns and then plan to get off the tour bus in downtown Cairns for some sightseeing and shopping.

We tendered into Yorkey's Knob (the port for Cairns) and got on the tour bus go go to the Kuranda Skyrail station.

https://www.skyrail.com.au/

We got our tickets and waited in line to board the gondola. The gondola fits 6 people and we shared it with a family of four.

The gondola made 2 stops and our guide recommended we get off at the first one to see the view and rainforest. At the second one we transfer to another skyrail line for the descent into Kuranda.

Transfer from one line to another

I think the whole trip to Kuranda Village took about 1-1/4 hours including the two stops.

We got off the gondola went through the gift shop exit and walked into the village. Took about 10 mins.

Very touristy.
We had lunch at a local cafe- hamburger for me and fish and chips for Sophia and two soft drinks-$48.50 Australian. So far everywhere we have gone the food is expensive.

After lunch we walked on the main street past all the shops, window shopping and to a outdoor market.
Our bus was waiting for us a block away.
We boarded it and it took us to downtown Cairns where we got off at a park near the downtown area.

We wanted to walk and see some of the city and find a souvenir shop to buy some t shirts.

One thing we noticed at all the shops we found was that they did not sell t shirts advertising the attractions of ea. city. ie I wanted to find a Great Barrier Reef shirt and finally found it here in Cairns.

After an hour we went back to get the bus to take us back to the harbor to board the tender to the ship.
The ship's staff arranged for us to use a large boat so more of us could go back and forth to the ship rather than go on the small ship's tenders. The boat above was very comfortable and provided a smooth ride.

The skyrail was really cool. Smooth ride and beautiful scenery.
I really enjoyed it.
